College Essay Unit 2014-2015
Introduction:

JT--Sketch the portrait of Henry Haggard and Sarah Bleary. What did you learn about admissions counselors?
What did you learn about the purpose of the college essay that you didn’t realize before you read Harry Bauld’s book?

Take a look at “Naked Confessions of the College-Bound” from the NY Times

Homework: Superlative sheet and do more reading.

Read for Tuesday:
  • Chapter 4“Chilling Out” 41-48
  • Chapter 5“Warming Up” 49-62
  • Chapter 6“Coming Alive” 63-74

Also, don’t forget to complete your “More About Me Survey” for Tuesday.

*For those of you who already took the course this summer from me, you have some options:
  • Find, compile, and bring all of your supplemental essay prompts with you to class on Tuesday
  • Or you may revise the Common Application Essay you worked on over the summer.
  • You might use this time to look at scholarship essay prompts or figure out if you’d like to apply to the honors programs at certain schools (KU’s deadline is 11/1).

Tuesday:

Listen to This American Life “How I got Into College”
Today on this day, Friday, August 29th will be the last time I update this Wiki!

We'll be using Google Classroom instead of this format, and I'll be making the switch on Tuesday, 9/2. So today's posting will be the last. Yeah!

All of you will need to use your ndsion.edu emails for the Google Classroom. The switchover should be pretty seamless and so many of you are already adept at using Gmail and Google Docs.

After you've set up your Sion account (first letter, last name @ndsion.edu), the codes to join my classroom are as follows:

4th Hour 7oyuaeb
5th Hour (A) pw52nf
6th Hour (A) i7809si

More About Me and the Common Application Essay--it's coming!

The following information has already been added to Google Classroom.

If you'd like for me to write you a letter of recommendation for college, please talk to me first and take a look at my form. If both are agreeable (me and your willingness to fill out the form), please download and fill our or complete on-line and send to me ASAP.
I need at least a month's notice before the deadline and October is looking a bit insane (the sooner, the better).

Present your SR presentation to the class.

Make sure to take copious notes. Remember, whatever you present, you'll be writing your In-class essay over the other SR novel. So, if your group presented Old School, you'll be writing over The Round House. You may use one page of hand-written notes for Tuesday's essay.

Since you don't have much homework, complete the Naviance "More About Me" survey due 9/2.

Also, it's a good time to look at the Common Application, look at the colleges where you're interested in applying and get a sense of the supplemental essays.

Theme statement discussion in small groups.

Move to your Sion Scholar Guides to Summer Reading Groups and begin working on your presentations.

First, agree upon the theme statement your group is using.

Next, divide the tasks: character, setting, point of view, style, major plot points.

Work on a five sentence summary.

For homework--find your supporting evidence from the text and begin developing your insight--this is the thinking step connecting your insight and supporting evidence to the theme.
Tuesday, 9/2 Naviance "More About Me" due.
8/18
Go over course guidelines and expectations. Make sure you're aware of the challenges and expectations of this class. Remember, it's a college-level commitment for a full year. If that's a hard one for you to consider, see me now. You should expect 1-2 hours of homework for each AP class you take.

SR survey--turn in.

Homework--write a theme statement for each of the SR novels/short stories ("The Short Happy Life..." & "The Snows...") for tomorrow's class. Obviously, these are complex works of literature so you can't them down to one theme. In thinking about theme, consider the major characters and the conflicts they deal with throughout the story.
Tuesday, 9/2 Naviance "More About Me" due.
8/15
SR Quiz--if absent see me ASAP-- Those absent on Friday will take the make-up quiz on Tuesday during lunch and study hall, so bring something to eat.
